Why do I need to service my automatic transmission?

The automatic transmission in your car is essentially a gigantic hydraulic pump. It uses transmission fluid to transfer engine torque to the drive wheels through a “torque converter” to a series of valves and pumps to control fluid flow and pressure. As with the other fluid systems on your car, much is expected of this fluid and it deteriorates rapidly with heat, contaminants, and oxidation. It will thicken over time and not flow as needed and reduce the efficiency of this unit, as well as shorten its useful life. Transmission failure is very costly and routine maintenance is the best way to prevent that from happening. Most manufacturers recommended servicing the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles.

What is the difference between a transmission service and a flush?

A transmission service consists of a test drive and evaluation of the transmission’s performance by a trained technician, removal of the transmission pan, replacing the fluid, installing a new filter, and finally making any necessary adjustments. A transmission flush is performed by attaching a machine to the transmission which re-circulates and cleans the fluid. The flush does not typically include a filter change. At our shop, we only service transmissions because we feel it is a better way to maintain and prolong the life of your transmission.

What is the maintenance schedule for my vehicle?

Through online subscriptions, our shop has access to the most current manufacturers’ recommended maintenance schedules for all makes and models of cars, both foreign and domestic. We are able to perform the factory recommended services based on your car’s mileage. We keep your car’s service and repair records in our computer system and can send you reminders about upcoming recommended services. You may also consult your owner’s manual for further information.

What is the usual lifespan of a transmission?

The answer depends on how it is maintained and used. If you bring your vehicle to a reputable mechanic whenever it needs to be checked, or if you are very careful with how you drive, the transmission can outlive the rest of the car.

What are the signs of transmission trouble?

There are several symptoms of transmission problems:

  • Slipping transmission
  • Red fluid leaking underneath your car
  • Unusual noise such as clunking, humming or whining
  • Lack of response when shifting gears
  • Grinding or shaking whenever you shift gears
  • Service Engine Soon light is on Burnt smell
  • SDragging clutch (manual transmission)

If you notice any of these signs, be sure to visit Eagle Transmission right away so that the problem can be corrected.

What is transmission fluid?

Transmission fluid is used to lubricate your entire transmission. Friction can lead to damage within; therefore, you have to ensure that it has ample fluid at all times.

What does transmission fluid look like?

Usually bright red, so as to distinguish it from motor oil.

Which is better, manual or automatic transmission?

The answer depends on your preferences. If you want to be in control while driving, manual transmission is ideal. If you want stress-free driving, automatic transmission is better for you. Please note that a vehicle with a manual transmission is usually cheaper than one that's automatic.

What's the difference between CVT, automatic and manual transmissions?

CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), automatic and manual are the most popular types of transmission.

  • A manual transmission comes with a stick shift, making the driver responsible for shifting to efficiently use the necessary gear, and a clutch that unlocks the gear before shifting.
  • An automatic is basically easier to use because it shifts gears immediately once you put it into drive.
  • A CVT is a type of automatic transmission that is composed of numerous gear ratios.

Will too much transmission fluid ruin a transmission?

Yes, it can have an adverse effect on your transmission, such as a leaking transmission. The overfill problem on some transmissions may cause excess internal pressure. The difficulty that the overfill presents is that draining fluid from a transmission is not an easy task. Typically, the pan on the transmission needs to be removed to drain fluid or special equipment is needed to purge the fluid from the pan.

Is a transmission cooler necessary?

If you use your vehicle for towing, loading heavy equipment or if you own a public vehicle, a transmission cooler will help your vehicle's transmission. However, if it is just for personal use, it is not too important, but we can still install one for you.

How does a transmission cooler work?

A transmission cooler is a thin, square-shaped component added to the front of the radiator or the air conditioning condenser that prevents your transmission from overheating. As its name suggests, the primary function of a transmission cooler is to keep the transmission fluid cool to prolong its life. Heated fluid travels from the transmission to the radiator, and from there, it goes to the cooler. Since there is air moving over the blades of the cooler, the heated fluid's temperature drops before it is sent back to the transmission. The process continues repeatedly.

We provide our customers with transmission service that is specific to their vehicle, therefore, there may be considerable variation in the actual cost for a transmission fluid & filter service.

What is the average cost of repairing a transmission?

There is no average cost to repair a transmission. Often there is a misconception between repairing a transmission and rebuilding a transmission. A typical transmission rebuild involves:
